Wow! Time at the border!

There always seems to be more that you plan for when getting ready to go.

We finally go over to Jeff's house late in the evening and saw the size of the pile of things they wanted to bring.  Clothes for over three weeks, gifts for the kids to open in La Paz, food, activity projects and school supplies.  I thinks they saw my eyes go up as I remembered the small area saved for their things after all the clothes and blankets we had packed.

It was amazing but small places kept opening up until everything was stashed and we were ready to go.

We slept the night in front of their house and by 0530 the next morning we were ready to travel.

It is 0530 in the morning but everyone is excited to get going!

A map of the Baja is taped to the wall to keep the kids up to date of our travel.

We planned to get to Lebec, Ca. the first night.  A lot of rain along the way and it was snowing in Lebec as we pulled in for the night 827 miles later.

Jeff at the wheel for about 7 hours straight!  It was nice to crawl in the back for a nap and then read for awhile.

I think Katie was pretty exhausted from all the trip preparation.

At 10 am this morning we arrived at San Ysidro, home to the world's busiest land border crossing, where U.S. Interstate 5 crosses into Mexico at Tijuana. In the 2005 U.S. fiscal year, more than 17 million vehicles and 50 million people entered the United States at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

November 1, 2012 Mexico opened their new crossing at San Ysidro dubbed "El Chaparral".  What ever they did, it worked.  We expected an average wait time of 90 minutes on a Saturday at 1000.  We drove right up to the examination area.  No wait!!

 New crossing story link.

The border guard approached the motor home just as I was getting out.  He came inside and met the rest of the family then proceeded to open all of  the cabinets and storage areas inside the motor home.  When he came across some of the wrapped gifts that Jeff's had brought along for their children to open, he ask what was in them!  With the kids out of earshot Jeff described the contents of all the gifts.

Then he ask me to unlock each of the basement doors and open them one at a time for his examination.  I think that I bored him by slowly displaying to him the propane area then the water and sewer bay.  I was wonderfully suprised as he passed by the  three main bay doors and ask me to open one on the end.  The three would have been the hardest to explain with hundreds of blankets, more than 60 bags of clothing and other supplies in those bays!

We then walked over to immigrations, filled out the forms, paid for our visas and headed back to the motor home.  Just as we were ready to leave two more border inspectors came and repeated the inside examination that the first one had done!  But they were not interested in the basement.

We were all so thankful to continue on to La Paz and Melitón with the load of supplies that we carry.

A favorite "Sea Food" place near San Quintin.

Every since we began planning this trip, stopping at El Cliente near San Quintin to get good seafood was something we looked forward to.   We have stopped here the last three trips down to La Paz.  It is somewhat unique to walk under a whale skeleton to get into a place to eat.

The best campechana.  Loaded with seafood.  What is in campechana?

Jeff and Katie at El Cliente.  Lots of fish tacos!

 Brody into his fish tacos.

We made it to El Rosario tonight just as it was getting dark.  There has been quite a bit of rain the last two day so there is no shortage of mud!  Tomorrow we plan to make it to the border of Baja Sur at Guerrero Negro.

  1. Okay so this is so fun to see you and follow your trip. i wrote down Campechana and might try it. Did the kids eat it?. Be sure to look for milemarker 76-77 north of La Paz. There is a road side grotto where our puppy Baja was found abandoned last March. The people who found her said she peeked out of this grotto and they lured her out with food...all 5 pounds of her at 12 weeks old or so. There is a bus stop near by. 4 more days of work for me and we are off...Yeah...Give the kids and Katie a hug for me. PS I never told them all that I loved their Christmas goodies and thoughtful card.
